Me, my stress and I.
For the last 3 decades or so, April has been a month dedicated to Stress Awareness.
Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that: “Demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilise.”
It is a significant factor in mental health problems including anxiety and depression but is also linked to physical health problems such as heart disease, lack of immunity, insomnia and digestive problems.
I know first-hand the ravages that too much stress can do to our body and mind if not kept under watch. About a decade ago, I suffered from burnout which heightened my anxiety and led to depression. It took me several years to get back on my feet. Still now I am not immune to stress and towards the end of last year I could see the tell-tale signs resurfacing. You’d think I would know better but it took a health scare for me to really act on it.
Individually, it is however our responsibility to understand what is causing us personal stress and to learn what steps we can take to reduce it for ourselves and those around us (see my other post about stress contagion).
Coaching can help you regain some control, alleviate some of the symptoms of stress and become more resilient.
