Check Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology often depicted as a five-tier model of human needs within a pyramid.

Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs, some taking precedence over others. For example, only once our most basic needs for physical survival are satisfied (to a certain degree), can we attend to needs higher up.

He also stipulated that everyone is capable and has the desire to move up the hierarchy toward a level of self-actualisation.

Unfortunately, progress is sometimes disrupted by a failure to meet lower-level needs and may cause an individual to fluctuate between levels. Divorce and loss of a job are good examples of life experiences that might make an individual move back and forth between the different types of needs.

“What do you need?”

I often start my coaching sessions asking my clients what they are bringing to the session and what they need.

A coaching programme might have indeed started on the premise that certain goals wanted to be achieved but ensuring that all my clients’ needs are satisfied is of primary importance to me.

I often speak of the ‘sustainability’ of the action plan my solopreneurs or business owners clients are creating.

Is a 5am start to work on your side-hustle every morning before your 9-5 job whilst your sleep has been disturbed by your newborn baby realistic? How long do you think this is going to last?

Is launching three new products over the next six months when you are already totally exhausted such a good idea?

Are you making sure that your basic needs including your wellbeing are satisfied?

Coaching is non advisory but as a Mental Health First Aider and burnout sufferer, I owe it to my clients to support them in developing plans which are sustainable and include a lot of selfcare and self-compassion.

So if you are looking for a shouty coach that will push you regardless, then I am not your coach!

If however, you want a coach that is motivating, but also caring, supportive and has genuinely your wellbeing at heart, then let’s talk.
