Time to talk.
Today is Time To Talk Day, a campaign started by mental health charity #timetochange to encourage us all to be more open and have a conversation about our mental health problems, which this year is more important than ever.
Talking and sharing can be hard or daunting but here are few tips to encourage others to open up:
1. Ask someone ‘How are you, really?’
2. Lead the way by sharing how you are feeling yourself right now and ask ‘what about you, how are things for you?’
3. Give the gift of time. Listen actively, avoid interrupting. Don’t feel you need to give advice, listening is already a great help.
4. Be patient. Don’t force someone to open up, if someone isn’t ready to talk, say something like’ I’m here if you want to talk’ or ‘I’m here when you’re ready’.
